Digital Nails Lying Swatch and Review

I hereby announce this week's Shitty Nail Art Monday and Cheap Polish Tuesday are cancelled!!!... In their place, we're doing up DIGITAL NAILS week! Digital Nails is shipping to Canada (again) and I am pretty damn stoked to have the glittery godliness of Digital Nails grace my country's lands once again. Digital Nails is run by geek chic coloured hair all-around-awesome lady Raphaelle and you can check out her Etsy store right here... Right here! Up on deck first is Digital Nails Lying!

Raphaelle packs her polishes neatly and carefully with bubble wrap, and the best of all... This SUPER colourful packing paper shreds!!! I cannot explain how awesome it made a normal Thursday morning. My package also came with a colourful Digital Nails magnet which is on my work's computer case.

And here's some bottle pr0n. Just because!

Just as a warning... My hands are gonna be WET a lot for this post... You'll see why in a bit.

From Digital Nails: Lying was inspired by the character The Lying Cat from the graphic novel series, Saga.
She’s the companion of The Will and can immediately detect whether someone is lying or not, and gives away their secret by simply stating “Lying.” This comic struck me like no other comic ever has - I fell in love instantly and fully. If you haven’t read it ( and you are 17+ - it’s for a mature audience) you should go borrow it or buy the first trade paperback RIGHT NOW. Seriously, it’s amazing.

At first glance, you can see that Digital Nails is a deepened lavender shade with a bunch of shimmer... Right?... Oh, but it's so much more than that. To my surprise (maybe I should read site descriptions first), it's a THERMAL POLISH! It's Cthulhu's first thermal!!! Oh my gosh and it made me learn that I am possibly the most warm blooded girl on the planet, haha! According to Digital Nails' Etsy shop, Lying is described as "a thermochromic which means that some of the pigments are temperature sensitive. It’s a dusty deep purple at room temperature & transitions to a rich dusty teal when it goes above 88 degrees F".

Formula wise, it covers gracefully with two coats. The colour change happens almost immediately as it starts to dry. (Uhhhh that may or may not be how I found out it was a thermal polish... "WAIT WHAT IS GOING ON".) It naturally give you a pretty slick gradient at your free edge. (With that said, please pay no attention to my broken middle nail, I thought I was doing a great job hiding it until now.) It dries with a slight satin finish so I glossed it up with a coat of Seche Vite. Have a look:

I wanted to see both sides of the thermal, so I had a cup of cold water by my lightbox but it wasn't enough. Almost as soon as I pulled my hand out of the cup, it would change back. So, I actually ran my hand in cold water for 20 seconds to get the party started. Here's the dusty deep purple:

And on the flipside, here's the bright dusty teal that appears at my natural body temperature and is even more prominent with hot water:

For funsies, here's some Nailz Craze stamping (but unfortunately yellow is totally not the best colour to stamp with. Lesson learned.):

With the natural gradient, you can kick up your nails a notch further with some glitter. Here's some OPI When Monkeys Fly!:

Overall, Digital Nails Lying is FUN as hell. I had so much fun watching the colours change in water and in different temperatures. Should be interesting to see how it looks in the winter! My only concern is my short nail - I think this polish is best when your nails have a bit of length on the free edge to take full advantage of the natural gradient that goes on!

What do you think of thermal polishes? I'm not familiar with Saga, but did Raphaelle create a wonderful ode to The Lying Cat or what?

Full disclosure: This sample was provided for an unbiased review.

  1. I love both colours that this polish has! I've never tried a thermal myself, and with my short nubbins I don't think I'd get the cool gradient effect that it does on long nails, but one day I will try one.

    1. I still get a hint of the other colour at the tip on my nub but I definitely prefer having a deeper effect, haha!!! Who knows, maybe thermals will be the next trend mainstream brands will move to! :D (They seem to be copying the glitter toppers pretty hard.)

  2. I have one thermal and my nails tend to be on the short side, so I pretty much only have the warm color unless I dip my hands in cold water, which is a pity because the warm color is nice enough but I really like cold shade. :-/

    1. My middle nail is a nub but I got the slightest hint! I still think it's fun to watch the colours change after washing my hands in cold water, hehehe. Hopefully you can find a polish that is vanilla out-of-box with the colour that you like!

    1. Oh yeah the thing I love about this polish is both sides of the coin look awesome! Yes pl0x.

I did more stamping last night but I think I am just doing it with the wrong polish - the stamping isn't coming out enough. I should stop hoarding my Konad polish.

    1. Hehe that big gold hex glitter was so notorious when it first came out - whoever knew a year of non-use would fix the taco glitters, lol!
