OPI Black Onyx Swatch and Review

Welcome to Thursday, which is normally the last post of the week but since I wasn't around for Shitty Nail Art Monday, I'll be around tomorrow. This post is a little bit boring but I realized I haven't highlighted this basic yet. Here's OPI Black Onyx, which I use for almost anything and everything: base colours, alone, in skittles, nail art - this one is good to go.

OPI Black Onyx is a black creme. Application and formula is smooth and slick, and you get opaque coverage after two coats. It is not so thick that it needs any sort of "self-leveling" properties. I think it's the perfect viscosity for a black creme, but I would honestly expect it as I would be paying the OPI premium to have it. Here's my swatch in two coats, sans top coat:

Really easy black creme, and I honestly would expect this kind of performance with the OPI brand name. It may seem like a waste to get a basic colour with a "brand name" but this has really kept up. I bought this in 2010 and it's still as good as new.

Do you have a basic black creme? It is a must have for the polish to be a one coater, or will two do just fine? Let me know your favourite brand for basics! I'll see y'all tomorrow.

  1. My basic black is Zoya Raven. I think someone better at applying than I am could get it perfect in one coat. If I am using it under something, one coat is good enought that I never bother with a second. I am planning on buying their Purity as a go-to white crème, since I haven't got one, and ordering some color spoons shows it will be a good white against my skin (while Snow White would be bad).

    1. I have Zoya's Snow White and it's not that good. I hope Purity is way better. I found Snow White to be a bit patchy - I definitely prefer OPI Alpine White for a white. (I swear I am not OPI biased!)

  2. This is a beautiful black! Nice and shiny finish, I love it!

I only have one black polish, can you believe it?!? It's Sinful Colors Black on Black and I love it! It could be a one coater, but I usually do two. I won it in a giveaway so once I see the end of the bottle, which is hopefully a looooong time from now, I'll need to find a new black.

    1. There's no real reason to have so many of one colour but back in the day I wore only black, so that's the reason for my weird vast collection, haha! I like the idea of one coaters but honestly, I like doing two even if it's just for consistency. I tried this cheap polish last night and it was definitely a one coater but it was so goopy and took forever to dry. YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG, GUYZ!!!!

  3. Even after wearing mostly black polish for about a few years (okay and an occasional bright blue because omg Manson wears blue nail polish omfg) I still love it. I have a few backups of my go-to Maybelline Blackout, it's the only polish I use up in about a year (:

    1. Haha you and I are the same! I totally just wore black nail polish for years! It's still my go-to, to be honest! I guess there's something about having a goth phase that sticks with you forever, lol.

    2. Did it leave you with the super power to spot ANY ex-goth anywhere too? :')

  4. I have a Sally Hansen black (those $3 small bottles) but it does a great job and I love it. I do have a nicole by opi black, and I have an Essie and Color Club ones coming as a part of nail art kits, maybe I'll have to do a comparison when I have them all! I do prefer 1 coat but 2 is okay.
