Deborah Lippmann On the Beach vs. China Glaze Sunday Funday: Comparison Swatch Review

So once in a while I like to change things up here. I mean, swatches are swatches but I figure, hey once in a while - let's do one of these things. Also because I have ADD and I need to get this off my chest, does anyone remember Econoline Crush? I heard Home on the radio the other day on the drive to work and I was so into it. How come they don't make music like they used to? Anyway, carrying on.

Today I'm seeing how Deborah Lippmann On The Beach stacks up against China Glaze Sunday Funday. First thing's first - I purchased On The Beach from the Deborah Lippmann clearance sale on Nail Polish Canada. I believe I picked it up for $11 and it was regularly priced at $22. For China Glaze Sunday Funday, I spotted it at Winners for a whopping $5.99. Caitlin mentioned on her blog that she didn't have a light sky blue creme and I realized I didn't either so obviously I went all copy cat on her. So I got these.

Deborah Lippmann On The Beach vs. China Glaze Sunday Funday

Off the superficial bat, I always love Lippmann bottles. I love the name "Sunday Funday" mostly because it sounded close to Day[9]'s "Funday Monday". I have a massive undeniable crush on Day[9] so there's that. But... Crushes and bottle lust aside, how do these actually apply and stack up against each other?

I found that while the shades are super similar (not exact dupes but probably similar enough to fool most people), the formula was completely different. Deborah Lippmann On The Beach was a very very sheer creme-jelly that needed three coats for full opacity. On the flip side, China Glaze Sunday Funday was a near one coater. It applied super thick and needed one and a half coats for full opacity.

Deborah Lippmann On The Beach is on the index and ring finger. China Glaze Sunday Funday is on the middle and pinky finger:

Both colours definitely give me the feel of that blue water you'd see on vacation some place nice and sunny. I would say that China Glaze Sunday Funday is a little more vibrant. I suppose it depends what you like. I could see that Deborah Lippmann On The Beach could even be used for a glitter sandwich, but if you are aiming for a quick application, China Glaze Sunday Funday might be the winner for you.

Well, I hope that was useful. Sorry I'm verbose and talk too much. I am trying to stop (not really). Do you own a sky blue creme like this? How do you like wearing it?

  2. I was just wearing one like this! Swatches soon :) I'm a bit behind on posting (but somehow still have time to read all my subs... interesting!) Mine is Annie by Julep and I love it, such a perfect summery colour. It is great seeing these side by side, it often seems like more expensive must be better, but from the photos and description I much prefer the CG. Interesting! Annie might be a tad brighter but I definitely need to stay away from buying either of these :)

    1. Haha I actually set a day aside to take all the photos and edit them and then I just write them as I go along. There's a whole backload of posts! I guess that explains my weird nails going shorter and then longer the next moment. :) It also doesn't help I simply don't shut up (and type 120 WPM) and luckily I have this blog to keep me in check, haha.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed that On The Beach was a 3 coater. I like a good 2 even coats of polish, but 3 is a little too sheer. Ah well. I know it goes wonderfully with Mermaid's Dream (which I also own but is in the untrieds.... Whoops.)

I still haven't tried any Juleps! Annie looks super close to the ones I tried here. It's such a great colour. I can't wait to wear it again. Great colour for a glitter topper.

    2. I really like Julep lately, you just have to make sure you get it on a good deal and don't pay the "sticker" price. Like I've gotten mystery boxes were 6 polishes come for $25, as opposed to $14 a polish like it says on the website. Annie was actually a fun promotion where you spend $25 you can get it for free, so I did that when I ordered a mystery box (plus I had to order $2 tote to take it over the mark, but I still think it was worth it. It's a 2-coater and such a nice colour! I agree on the 2 vs. 3 coat remark.)

  3. I can see a hint of a difference in the last picture, but in direct light they look the same. I think I have 1 or 2 similar blues in my untrieds, I should take them out soon (at least one of them). Thank you for the comparison! :D

    1. Was it the blue you used with the snowman art? I guess that was a Revlon polish you posted. Anyway, it's almost summer in Canada (LOL) - time to whip out these colours girl! :D :D :D I can't wait for HOLOS.

I am dying over that Cult Nails' sneak preview of their holo. I said I wouldn't buy anything from them out of customer rudeness but that polish looks so good from previews so far. What to do...

  4. Both are gorgeous! They're almost exact copies of one another.

  5. I have always felt that Deborah Lippmann is a rip-off. I own a few of them, and like you, got them when there were big sales going on. I can't fathom dropping $18 on a regular priced bottle. Mine chipped after a day's use (and I tried different base/top coats to see if it was something on my end, but no dice) and I just felt like the formula isn't as nice as it should be. I wouldn't pay more than $8 for them, to be truthful.

  6. Yay! I definitely think that China Glaze would be the one to grab if you just need a solid blue polish. Although a blue jelly is intriguing.
