Rainbow Honey "Summer of 199X" Tessie Swatch and Review (Bonus: Rainbow Honey Magic Cake, Rainbow Honey The Worst Possible Thing)

Usually Thursdays are Fridays here but I'm continuing the week with more samples from Rainbow Honey's latest and greatest "The Summer of 199X" collection inspired by Earthbound for Super Nintendo. If you haven't been following their Facebook page, just get you to speed, here's a copypasta from the press release:

"Another video game that holds a special place in my heart! I wanted this collection to bring me back into the game, and I think each new lacquer takes me to a special moment or reminds me of a certain boss that resulted in one too many Game Over's... Part I is made up of 5 new glitterbombs bursting with shimmer and color - they all layer to opacity but can be used over other colors as well. Part II is 3 new shimmer-dusted cremes and 2 new glitter toppers that give each creme a bold or sweet look. I am so excited to add these all to our lineup!" – Dee

I'm excited too, so without much further adieu, I bring you Rainbow Honey Tessie!

Rainbow Honey Tessie Bottle

In Earthbound, Tessie is a "friendly, long-necked monster which lets Jeff Andonuts and the Bubble Monkey ride on her back to cross Lake Tess in Winters; Tessie was inspired by Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster." (Source). From the press release, Rainbow Honey describes Tessie as: "No need to join the Tessie-Watching Club when you can have this dusty and shimmery periwinkle creme at your fingertips." I'm not actually sure if it would describe this polish as dusty, as usually that term means slightly desaturated, but I do think this polish is actually quite vibrant against my skin tone and leans into a pastel purple with a periwinkle shimmer spirit. That's my take on it, anyhoo.

Formula-wise, Tessie follows the same smooth, flat application as Apple Kid. No complaints whatsoever and covers beautifully in two coats. Rainbow Honey Tessie has a natural shine to it too. Here's my swatch in two coats with no top coat:

Rainbow Honey Tessie is beautiful on its own but it definitely is an invitation to play with glitter toppers. Here's the beautiful Rainbow Honey Magic Cake, which is also a part of The Summer of 199X collection. I thought this combination would look odd, but I actually ended up loving it - I am guessing it's due to Tessie lending another colour to the palette and letting the neon really POP! I used one coat of Seche Vite Top coat:

Here's what the combination looks matted with Essie Matte About You. I love it both ways:

And of course, my exploration of Rainbow Honey wouldn't be complete without exploring other past collections, so I decided to head back to where I first discovered Rainbow Honey - the Equestria collection. Here's one coat of The Worst Possible Thing over top of Rainbow Honey Tessie with a layer of Seche Vite top coat:

Here it is matte-fied and I really love it this way. Really gives a highlight to all the glitters, something I think Rarity would love:

Although I think I might already own a polish similar to this one, I really love the shimmer and the great formula is a huge selling feature. That natural shine is great and I'll personally be picking up and am more than happy to add it to my collection. If you're interested in this polish, here's some helpful copypasta information from the press release:

Isn't Tessie the cutest lochness monster ever? This polish does perfect justice to the source! Also, does anyone know where I can find the goddamn Nintendo 3DS XL Animal Crossing New Leaf bundle? I WANT IT AND IT'S SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE! What glitter topper do you think looks best over Tessie?

Full disclosure: This sample was provided for an unbiased review.

  1. Gorgeous! I love periwinkle and I wanted this one from the start. I am also surprised by how much that magic cake combo works, and I tend to prefer everything with shine but the matte with worst possible thing is really neat too (and that combo is SO pretty, I usually think of that colour as best over dark shades, but this really works too.)

Sigh this post has only had the result of making me want to buy MORE polishes from RH besides this collection :P

    1. I think I must be the only person who is confused by the term periwinkle because of a crayon set I had when I was a kid, lol. "Periwinkle" to me is a very light ash grey blue. Stupid childhood crayons! Anyway if anyone had the same crayon set, I just dubbed it "pastel purple creme with periwinkle shimmer" because it does have those cold blue-ish bits, haha. You could definitely go either way on matte or gloss for glitterXcreme combinations with Tessie. Unlike Apple Kid, I totally feel that gloss is the way to fly.

Haha to be fair, the Equestria collection has a really soft spot in my heart. I still think it's my favourite collection from RH but in all honesty, this Earthbound thing is coming up pretty damn close!

    2. That's funny about periwinkle, yeah this is definitely periwinkle to me. I also prefer apple kid glossy :)

I really want The Worst Thing and Yoshimi in addition to this collection, so I'm thinking of buying it 2 orders so I end up with 2 bonus LE polishes (part 1 plus an extra glitter topper then same for part 2). All that means I need to find another $110 lying around haha. I do think doing it in 2 parts is the way to go for me since I haven't used RH before and I have been hesitant about some of their formulas, it sounds like those issues are absolutely gone with this collection though which makes me extra excited to get it :)

    3. Ah ha! I found the culprit!!! Here's the crayon I was talking about: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P6w5uJrLOSY/TZkHCV_ewAI/AAAAAAAAAA4/zzGnEaJAWgY/s1600/IMG_0048-web.jpg and this is what I imagine periwnkle in my head: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2197/4121537558_ca8c1d6ff4.jpg

Anyway as much as I love Rainbow Honey, I am willing to admit that as a long time customer, I was really iffy about their formulas. So I guess that's why I have a tone of OH MY GOD IT'S SO GOOD! And really, it's SO good. I am thrilled that RH has really established their formulas this year. I can tell you that I have no issues with Yoshimi or any glitter toppers from this year, now for their glitter bombs, I am still reserved. I found The Worst Possible Thing to be REALLY thick. Hyper thick suspension base. I warned Kylie about it before she bought it but she picked it up anyway and she told me that she had no issues. I bought mine when it was first released, so my best guess is the formula is refined and most likely better. It's definitely really goddamn pretty though, so despite the thickness, I still roll with it. It's really thick, but because it's a topper, it's workable and you only see the glitter, rather than any struggles I had to apply it, lol!

However, I guess Ivy's Kiss was a glitterbomb and it was a pleasure to apply as well. MAYBE THEY'RE JUST AMAZING NOW OR SOMETHING.

Which part are you going to get first?

    4. OH yeah, that crayon is definitely too blue. That said, this colour (Tessie) looks too purple... so ah well. I love purple so I can't complain. I have a periwinkle raincoat :D

I had definitely read about thick formula, although it seemed like nobody cared, it's expensive polish for me and I wasn't in a rush to try it with a thick formula at that price admittedly. I am so in love with The Worst Possible Thing I'd probably order it anyway though :P I'm glad Kylie had no problems and hopefully I wouldn't either.

I have NO IDEA what part to order first. I was thinking Part 1 because they are more traditional RH colours, but I'm not too keen on the orange and I think these have more of the formula problems (one review I read of Pink Cloud called it very thick and very gritty :/) which means I may get part 2, the neon topper is gorgeous and so is tessie and mint flavour, I'm not sure about butterfly glitter but it seems like it might be a safer bet. SO HARD. Also, when I saw the LE on the cremes it looked so good. This post has just convinced me to start off with part 2 unless I see swatches of part 1 that change my mind :)

    5. Haha, see! That's what I think "periwinkle" is!~ So I guess that's why I was getting all crazy over the colour up there, hehe.

I think if you are concerned over formula, I would recommend with starting with Part 2. The toppers look freaking amazing - I know Magic Cake is a sure fire winner in my books and although I Miss You has giant glitter, I am willing to try to make it work BECAUSE PRETTY. I know that a lot of people have called the glitterbombs gritty but to be honest, that's kind of up to snuff with glitterbombs. Even OPI Teenage Dream is gritty and it follows in the same saturated glitter jelly format. Anyway, Part 2 is my choice, but let me know what you end up with! I hope to see them on your blog sometime too. :3

    6. You definitely will! I'm planning on part two plus Yoshimi because I have been dying over that one and seeing it with apple kid for example in your swatches just makes me want it more. 3 beautiful cremes and 3 awesome glitter toppers sounds great to me :) And the LE looks awesome over the cremes, so yay. I can definitely make a part 1 order later, maybe even wait for a new monthly LE before I do. part 2 does seem more summery anyway in terms of what I should get first. I will definitely be sharing them on my blog when they arrive! :)

  2. That matted worst possible Tessie combo is gorgeous. The word "dusty" makes me fear the periwinkle will turn on me - how does it compare in saturation to Dusty Bot? That was too greyed out for me. There's this fine line between "ooh pretty purple" and "my least favorite color" and it's so hard to tell from photos on the Internet.

    1. I know how you feel about the term 'dusty' which is why I am really careful with that word. To be honest, I don't think it's "dusty" at all. I really do try to make the colours as accurate as possible and feel confident enough to say that my photos are very accurate. I make a note to NEVER photoshop or enhance my colours so what you're seeing up there is best presented in photos in indoor light. :) I hope that helps!

In regard to comparing to Dusty Bot, I would say that Tessie is LEAPS ahead in saturation. I haven't tried Dusty Bot myself on the nail but from the bottle, I can tell there is not much vibrant pigment and the polish is mostly leaning on the foil properties. Tessie is bright (definitely not neon) and fun.

    2. It does help! Well, it doesn't help my wallet, because I want them all... ;-)

  3. I'm so excited for this collection. I really love Tessie with The Worst Possible Thing. It just really brightens up the color and brings out those purples! I do like it with the neon but I think they compete with each other, but that's just my opinion.

    1. Magic Cake is definitely pretty loud as I discovered last night when I was swatching, lol. Not a force to be reckoned with, but I definitely think out of the Summer of 199X - it would be in my Top 3 for Must Haves. Really looking forward to playing with the whole collection!

  4. This is a gorgeous colour! Both glitter toppers looks great over it, and at the same time they both give it such a different feel. The matteness definitely brings out all the colours, and I think I actually prefer this colour mattified.

When I started reading your post I thought "sounds like a play on the Lochness Monster", hehe! :)

    1. I love this colour, but it sort of reminds me of that Essence one I picked up a while back. (http://clawofcthulhu.blogspot.ca/2013/03/essence-oh-my-glitter-swatch.html) Although I guess now that I am looking at it, the Essence one is less pastel and more cold toned.

Hehehe, this whole collection just makes me want to play Earthbound! I am unfortunately trolling Craigslist for one of those stupid bundle and they are going up towards $300. Ridic.

  5. The last combination is definitely my favorite, it's so so SO pretty!

  6. Thanks you for your reviews of these polishes! I bought the whole "Summer of 199x" collection kind of on a whim, so I'm glad to see that they do look good on!

    1. I think you'll be very happy with them. Rainbow Honey has come a long way and their formula is super refined and honestly, you can't go wrong with an Earthbound inspired polish! I bought the whole set myself. :)
