Urban Outfitters Nail Polish Sea Dust Swatch and Review

Welcome to Cheap Polish Tuesday where we explore and discover polishes that are found on sale or regular price for $5 or less! (I should really have that copied and pasted by now but I am still typing it all out. And I am typing this live because I am bad at scheduling posts!) Today I've got another one from Urban Outfitters. Each polish is priced regular at $6 but there is an ongoing promotion where you can buy 2 polishes for $8, which definitely sneaks these polishes into Cheap Polish Tuesday.

So today I've got Urban Outfitters Sea Dust, which is an alleged dupe of Deborah Lippmann's Mermaid's Dream. From the bottle, it looked like a possibility, but when I wore it, I am just unsure. Sea Dust is a shimmer glitter mixture of seafoam green, with blue teal glitters. It has very foil-like tendencies. Formula wise, it applied nicely however the polish was VERY sheer. So sheer you can see where my nail's free edge begins. I'm not really a fan of that. Admittedly, Mermaid's Dream is in my untrieds (sorry!), but from all the swatches I've seen, it looks a whole lot grittier on the finish with a lot more dimension. Anyway, here's Urban Outfitters Sea Dust with three coats, no top coat:

I am not really a fan. I am a little disappointed in how sheer it is, and how flat it falls because there's no real dimension and I think the foil finish is overwhelming. I decided to test it as a topper over OPI Black Onyx. Here's one coat of Urban Outfitters Sea Dust over top of two coats of OPI Black Onyx:

Anyway, maybe I am being too hard on this polish because I was expecting something else. If you wanted a "finer" version of Deborah Lippmann Mermaid's Dream, this might be your winner. I wouldn't call them dupes but I'll do an official comparison soon. Eventually. I tried to find out if Urban Outfitters polishes are 3 Free, but unfortunately I can't find a confirmation.

What do you think of Sea Dust? Do you think it's comparable to Deborah Lippmann Mermaid's Dream?

  1. Not a huge fan honestly. I googled the Lippmann polish and I like it better, I think this is sheerer like you said and I just don't like sheer polishes much though the seafoam colour is pretty. It looks alright over the black, that's a good idea, but it's definitely not one I'll be picking up. Better luck next time UO!

    1. Yeah I am totally not a fan of it as a dupe. Alleged dupe, anyway. I think it might be nice if it was doing its own thing but I had different expectations. It doesn't fare well on its own so if it's limited to being a topper, I wouldn't say it's a must have either!

  2. I agree, in bottle form it looks close to Mermaid's Dream, but not on the nails. And I'm really surprised at how sheer it is. It's too bad because it had good potential. It looks good over black though. I wonder how it would work for a glitter gradient...?

    1. I think it might be too strong to work as a gradient - I don't think there's a way to pull it off because the first coat would have a defined line. I could possible use it to transition into the real DL polish, but eh, I guess we'll have to see! Hehe!'

Anyway, totally disappointed. Everyone else seems to have raving reviews on it. I guess I'll have to file this under the "I Don't Get it".

  3. Ugh sad day I guess there is a reason people pay big money for DL. That would be awesome if it were a dupe. I guess not that it matters since I have MD

    1. Haha I remember paying full price for the polish when it came out... And yet I still haven't tried it. I am the worst.

  4. I wish it had more of those glorious teal glitters :c I think it looks cool over the black base though!

    1. I think it would work a lot better if it had more teal glitters, and if it had more grit and if it had less foil finish - haha, I guess I just wanted it to be like the original DL polish!

  5. Too bad it isn't a dupe of DL's Mermaid's Dream. On it's own, I think it's very pretty and light. I love it over black too. I think it'd look very nice other teals, greens, or blues. Still a great buy for the price. Mermaid's Dream is $19. Yikes!

Also, was on the UO website looking at some of their nail polish and I found a similar one to Icing's Choco Chip or Mint Choco Chip - http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=20611299c&color=042&parentid=MORE%20IDEAS

    What do you think?

    1. It's just weird because everyone else says it's a dupe but I didn't see it. I remember shaking the bottle so it was well mixed. Maybe I got a bad one? I don't know. It's definitely great as its own thing but that's about it. And yeah I remember paying $22 for Mermaid's Dream... No shame, no shame... (Okay, maybe a little.)

And that polish looks pretty close to the same family! Definitely not a dupe of either! That one wasn't in my UO last time I was there, but I'll check it out next time I am downtown for a concert. :D

  6. Also, found out that UO nail polish is 3-Free.

    1. Do you have a source on that? I couldn't find one that 100% confirmed it. It wasn't on their shop... Or maybe I am blind.

    2. I got UO "Dust" nail polish from my friend and I peeled the label on the bottom for the ingredients list. It said it was "DBP, Toulene, and Formaldehyde Free". I hoping it means all of them.

    3. Oh nice! I've got a few more to review so I'll confirm it next time. I just wish it was advertised on the website! Some people won't buy polish if it isn't 3 Free!
